The Whitby Report – July 29, 2019

Today is Monday, July 29, 2019. I am your host Stone and this is The Whitby Report.

I’ve been away for most of the weekend, sitting around a campfire by day and evening, battling alien probes by night. Let’s get back into the swing of things.

Weather
It is currently 23°C, feeling like 29°C. We’re expected to reach a high of 28° (36°C with humidex). Environment Canada has issued a Heat Warning and have advised the vulnerable to remain indoors. There are small cooler pockets which may lead to showers and thunderstorms in some areas.

Local News
One man dead, four injured after collision in Whitby. On Saturday night, a car crossed the median from the 407 eastbound lane and struck a vehicle in the westbound lane. Source: https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2019/07/27/one-man-dead-four-injured-after-collision-in-whitby.html

Stone’s Take
Police were called to the scene around 815pm, so while the sun was setting, there should certainly have been enough light. There is significant distance between the eastbound and westbound lanes: the median is quite large.

For the person to have crossed, I can imagine only these scenarios: 1) Dude was distracted or under the influence. 2) Driver had a medical ‘event’. 3) The driver could have been blinded by the sun, became disoriented and lost control of the car.

The only person to die was the rear passenger person in the car that crossed over. So, was this an Uber or Lyft? Maybe the passenger tried to reach up to the front to take control of the car as it was heading to the median?

Lots of questions; I’m sure we won’t know any of the answers.
