The Whitby Report – October 1, 2019

Today is Tuesday, October 1, 2019. I am your host Stone and this is The Whitby Report.

The Garden Report
Today was so warm and humid I thought it was still summer. Honestly, it’s summer last gasp, as a cold front is approaching. The collision between the two fronts has created a very cool thunderstorm again. My garden is being watered for free again, which is always great news! We’re expecting the radishes to fully mature by October 11. We’re just hoping the weather can hold until then as we’re going back to the more seasonal temperatures in the teens.

Local News / Stone’s Take
Whitby Conservative Candidate Says Tory Promise on Health Care Will Help Autism Funding. This was the only “Whitby” news I could find for today. Basically Scheer delivered a speech and took questions from the media while at the Whitby Abilities Center. He left right from there and didn’t take any questions from the public.

Todd McCarthy, the Conservative candidate for Whitby, said (paraphrasing here) “the Conservatives would restore funding to a stable level so provinces can provide proper autism services”. The public has reiterated that they would not vote for the Conservatives because of the severe unpopularity of Ford (our provinces Conservative Premier).

From what I understand, health care funding gets paid out at the provincial level. The retraction of services is a Ford / Conservative initiative and has nothing to do with any federal funding. This is a bit of a side-step by the Conservatives here in Whitby; I feel it’s a bit of a scramble as polls shifted drastically, showing the Liberals now with a slight edge for winning our riding.

I would like to point out that only Todd McCarthy has actually come to my door. To date, I’ve not seen any of the other candidates here. I did spot the Liberal candidate, Ryan Turnbull, at Open Streets Whitby, however, I couldn’t ask him anything as he was already talking with someone else. I’ll wait for them to show up here and see if my vote really matters to them.
